Welcome to My Paramedic Life
January 2nd, 2006Over the past 16 years, I have had the opportunity to endeavor in quite an adventure. My career as a Paramedic has given me a lot of knowledge, as well as a unique look on life in general. I have seen the good in a great many people, as well as the ugly side of society.
It is my goal to present as much of my experience to you as I can, and hope that if you can have some idea of what life in the emergency field is like, as I think the general public has a totally different concept of what our reality is like.
If you are already living this life, then you may find that we have a great deal in common. You may even find some of my stories a bit boring, or perhaps have something similar to add to them. I do want to hear them, and you are welcome to publish them here.
If you are visiting this site and have no experience in this field, I hope you enjoy reading what is here, and can leave with a better understanding of EMS life. You will find some very interesting reading here, and hopefully you find some of them humorous, as well as see what some of the dark side of EMS is really like.
I have nearly exited this career recently, but I do still work a few hours a month. It is common for Paramedics to become frustrated with the job, and the “Medic burnout” terminology was definitely not my concept. It comes from years of stress, anxiety, depression, and aggravation at how the system works. Maybe in the future I will regain an interest in it, as it has been my second love for many years. Until then, I have decided to share my stories with all of you.
I encourage input from anyone reading my stories, and welcome your opinions and contributions. Feel free to tell some stories of your own!
Enjoy!
An EMS Prayer
As I perform my duty Lord
Whatever be the call,
Help to guide and keep me safe
From dangers big and small.
I want to serve and do my best
No matter what the scene,
I pledge to keep my skills refined,
My judgement quick and keen.
This calling to give of my self
Most do not understand,
But I stand ready all the time
To help my fellow man.
To have the chance to help a child
Restore his laugh with glee,
A word of thanks I might not hear,
But knowing is enough for me.
The praise of men is fine for some,
But I feel truly blessed,
That you oh Lord have chosen me
To serve in EMS!
